Unveiling Weekend

A full and varied programme of events took place to coincide with the unveiling of the statue.

The programme for the unveiling weekend included:

  • Donors’ Dinner in the Chateau de Montreuil
  • Official unveiling ceremony
  • Addresses by the Mayor of Montreuil and others.
  • Laying of wreaths at the War Memorial.
  • Memorial Service in the Église Sainte-Saulves, Montreuil-sur-Mer (with Ypres Lone Piper).
  • Vin d’Honneur (reception cocktail) in the Citadelle of Montreuil-sur-Mer, as guest of the Mayor and the Town Council.
  • Visit to the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in Étaples; wreath-laying.
  • Visit to La Chartreuse, Neuville-sous-Montreuil: WWI hospital and Belgian reception centre [Quand la Chartreuse était belge (1914-18)’].

All-day events included:

  • Talks by English/French specialists and historians (Dr Charles Goodson-Wickes, Jonathan Walker, Bruno Béthouart) (various venues).
  • Exhibition of Photographs from the Haig Family Archives, ‘GHQ Generals’) (Tourist Office).
  • Exhibition of Photographs in the Tourist Office.
  • Visit to La Chartreuse, Neuville-sous-Montreuil: WWI hospital and Belgian reception centre [‘Quand la Chartreuse était belge (1914-18)’].
